Saint Louis of France
Our Patron Saint
Patron of Crusaders, Soldiers, Kings, Tertiaries and Others
St. Louis, King of France, patron of Tertiaries, was the ninth of his name. He was born at Poissy, France, in 1214. His father was Louis VIII, and his mother was Blanche, daughter of Alfonso VIII of Castille, surnamed the Conqueror. At the age of twelve he lost his father, and his mother became regent of the kingdom. From his tenderest infancy she had inspired him with a love for holy things.
In 1234, he married Margaret, the virtuous daughter of Raymond Berenger, Count of Provence, and two years later he took the reigns of government into his own hands. In 1238, he headed a crusade, in which he fell a prisoner among the Mohammedans, but a truce was concluded and he was set free and he returned to France. In 1267, he again set out for the East at the head of a crusade but he never again beheld his native land. In 1270, he was stricken by the pestilence at the siege of Tunis, and after receiving the Last Sacraments, he died. His feast day is August 25th. (For more about St. Louis...)
Prayer to Our Patron Saint
Admirable Catholic King and devoted family man, you raised eleven children of God, personally served the poor, and respected human rights. You founded "houses of God" and provided an example for the religious by your fidelity. Inspire tertiaries to live their vocations and thereby give an example of Christian love to others in the world. Amen"
In Their Footsteps
The Third Order of
Saint Francis of Assissi
Besides being a family man and king, Louis IX was a Tertiary, a member of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, a religious order for people who live in the secular world. Today, the Third Order has evolved into these two groups:
The Third Order of the Society of St. Francis is an Anglican Order. Its aim is to make the Lord known and loved everywhere, to spread the spirit of fellowship and to live simply. Members accomplish this through a life of prayer, study and work.
The Secular Franciscan Order is for Roman Catholics. Members pledge to live the Gospel as St. Francis did, devoting themselves "to careful reading of the gospel, going from gospel to life and life to the gospel."
Members are men or women, married or single, clergy or laity, They profess a lifelong dedication to Christ without giving up their careers or their lives at home. To learn more about these organizations, visit The Franciscans' web site at The National Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order, USA, http://www.nafra-sfo.org.
